My First Big Rave

03-17-98

Well, I finally got to my first big party this past weekend.  Me and my friend Kent went to a rave called Beyond (I think that was the name) here in Winston-Salem, NC at the Millenium Center.  It was incredibly cool.  I went completely sober, but I still had a great time.  We arrived around midnight and got in line to get in.  After waiting 20 minutes, a guy walked by and said that the line for people with tickets was around on the other side of the building.  So we walked around and got into a line with about 10 people.  In a few minutes we had walked through the front doors, been frisked for weapons (I'm guessing cause they didn't look too hard for drugs or anything), got wristbands to show we had payed, and jumped into the flow of people through a narrow hallway.  The DJ's were already spinning, and the bass was shaking the windows.  The visual aspect was incredible.  They had lasers going all over the place, colored lights, a directed black light, a disco ball reflecting lasers of light all over, and of course a fog maching to make it look even cooler.  And of course the lights were coordinated with the music.  After a few minutes of checking out the scene, me and Kent found a clear spot on the 'dance floor' and started dancing for what would be the next few hours.  A friend named Kevin ran into us and we chilled with him for awhile.  He has this really cool glowing balls that he plays with at parties and juggles and whatnot.  Very mesmerizing to watch.  After dancing for awhile, we took a break to re-hydrate at a buck fifty per bottle.  We sat in the 'lobby' cooling down and just chilling smoking cigarettes for awhile.  Then it was back to the party.  After some more dancing and resting, I decided I was tired as hell and needed a quick catnap.  WE went back to my car and I caught a quick hour of sleep.  Then back to the party for some more dancing.  When we finally felt drained enough not to be able to dance anymore, we decided we might as well take off, cause the DJ at the time wasn't all that great, and the rave would be over in an hour or so.  We walked out of the doors at 6:30 to be greeted by the rising sun, and the cold morniing air.  After getting home, getting a bowl of Lucky Charms and some Scooby Doo cartoons, I crashed til about 3pm.
All in all the rave was a blast, and definitely worth the $22 I paid for a ticket.  And it was rather safe, i.e. no drugs or weapons rampant among the party kids.  BUt then again, I'm sure many of the kids there were under hte influence of something or other, but that didn't affect my partying.  There were some of the biggest friggin pants on some of the kids there.  I still don't understand that style.  I can understand baggy, but baggy to the point of where you look like you're wearing a dress?  *shrug* oh well.. do your own thing I guess.  I do have a great respect for the kids who can dance.  I need to learn some 'moves.'  I basically do my own thing, i.e. whatever feels right at that moment in the music that moves my muscles.  But I love dancing, and I love the music, and I can't wait for the next rave near here.
